Ideas for Churches

PeaceWeek is for everyone in the community.. including the churches. As well as supporting the PeaceWeek activities such as the Family Lantern Parade on March 7, why not put on your own event or tweak existing activities? All of the ideas below have been used by various local churches in previous years. - Have a Peace-themed Sunday family service, with activities for children and young people. Peace is a big subject and a concern that everyone has in some way. It is linked to other issues such as justice… there are many ways to approach it. - Have a Peace-theme running through the week’s usual activities: prayer meeting, Bible Study, Home Groups, youth clubs. - Open your building every day during PeaceWeek for an hour as a place for prayer and reflection. Provide some resources and aids… and maybe tea and coffee. - Or make it a 24 hour ‘Prayers for Peace’ event. Invite other local churches to join in and help with providing a rota to cover the day. Have prayers at specific times during the day, or just have the space available for people to come in and out to pray and reflect as they wish. - Hold a vigil for peace outside. Have some leaflets to give passers-by explaining what you’re doing and why. - If you have morning prayers during the week, open them up to other churches to join in, and/or for anyone to come. - Host a public meeting where concerns and worries about gun crime can be aired. Invite the police, local councillors or someone from an organisation such as Mothers Against Violence, Carisma, Street Pastors. - Get the young people to brainstorm more ideas: use their creativity and energy.
