Peace Week 2006

The 4rd inner-south Manchester Peace Week took place from March 19-26. It continued the pattern of each Peace Week being bigger than the last as more and more people get involved.
New this year were PeaceFM local radio station and the ‘Good Riddance’ Weapons Hand-In, which linked to our theme of Forgiveness and the need to get rid of things that take away our peace.

  • A packed Zion Arts Centre for the superb PeaceWeek Launch event, showcasing the gifts and talents of local young people.
  • Thousands of young people seen in around twenty special Assemblies, workshops and discussions in local schools on the theme of Forgiveness.
  • A wide-ranging programme of events and activities right across the area involving Churches, Faith Groups, local community organisations and businesses.
  • Young people in schools and community centres made over 250 lanterns for the “Lighten Up” family peace walk to Platt Fields. The rain stopped 15 minutes before the start! We were welcomed by the Lord Mayor, before throwing the things we wanted to get rid of onto the ‘Burn the Bad’ bonfire.
  • 3 shotguns, 6 revolvers and ammunition and 16 knives handed in for the ‘Good Riddance’ Weapons Hand-In.
  • A Peace Book was produced featuring contributions from local schoolchildren and young people writing about peace. 10,000 copies were distributed to 50 schools in the area. We have a few spare copies, email if you’d like one. Download 4 sample pages. (PDF format)
  • Four weeks of positive sounds on PeaceFM (Want more local radio? Email us and say so)
  • Positive reports in the press, radio and TV.
