PeaceWeek 2009

peaceweek09_300PeaceWeek 2009 had as its theme ‘Hands up For Peace’. This year we were joined by Old Trafford. Once again there was a programme of assemblies, classes and creative workshops in many local schools, culminating in a well-supported Schools Showcase at the Whitworth Art Gallery. The Gallery was also the venue for another fantastic Launch Event featuring the gifts and talents of local young people, and the meeting place for three of the Lantern Parades (Moss Side, Longsight, University), where everyone was invited to make a handprint on a giant ‘Hands Up For Peace’ collage. There was also a fourth Lantern Parade in Old Trafford which had a superb turnout. Once again, we had a rain-free evening!hand_small1

The OSBA Peace Awards took place at the City of Manchester Stadium again and was a very successful event. For more on this and photographs go to the OSBA website. Other events and activities included the PeaceWeek Shield - 5-a-side football and netball - a breakfast with local MP Tony Lloyd, a shared event with Manchester LICC looking at Peace in Christian belief, and several organised by other groups. For photos and a couple of short videos from PeaceWeek 2009 have a look at our Flickr page.

PeaceWeek 2009 received a lot of positive media coverage, especially in the Manchester Evening News. We’ve been nagging about reporting good news - especially about Moss Side - for years and it is great that this is beginning to happen.

Thanks to all who helped make PeaceWeek 2009, ‘Hands Up for Peace’ happen, including… students from the Manchester College helped us with a motif and publicity, including posters and leaflets, and the banners and T shirts used on the Lantern Parade … students from the University of Manchester who helped with stewarding … Jason and John for sound systems for the Launch Event, Lantern parade and OSBAs … Pete Johnson Trio for stepping in last minute to provide music for the OSBAs … Karen and Clive for sterling work on lanterns - making and launching … John Egerton and other officers from GMP for support … the team who worked in the schools … the various event organisers … and many others. Most of all thanks to all of you who turned up, cheered, organised, nominated and in all sorts of ways put your hands up for peace!
